To visit websites, and to send and receive e-mail:

• Internet Connection

To get online from your home computer, you'll need to sign up with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Most likely, you'll connect via your telephone line.  Typically this service will cost between $12 and $20 per month on an ongoing basis.  You don't need an Internet connection to have a website, and you don't need a website to have an Internet connection.  This connection allows you to visit websites (including your own, of course) and send and receive e-mail.

To have your own website available to the world:

• Website Design

For everything from page layout to graphics processsing to html coding, there is a one-time initial expense which varies in price range, depending on the complexity of the project.  As a small to medium-size business, you should expect to pay between $1000 and $5000 for a professionally executed site.
• Website Hosting

An ISP lets you access the Internet, but does not work to make your website available to the rest of the world.  For the public to access your website, you need to arrange to have it hosted on a server computer.  This demands much more by way of resources than those available from your home or business.  Site hosting is an ongoing expense which will run between $10 to $150 per month, depending on the level of service and complexity of your site.
• Domain name registration

Registering your domain name can be done by your web designer.  There are some risks involved should you choose to do this  yourself.  Many companies re-sell domain names as a source of revenue for their business.  If you are paying more than $15 annually, you are paying a re-seller more than the basic registration fee.
• Website updates.

You can expect to incur some modest cost for any changes made to website pages, for periodic updates, etc.  These charges vary with different webmasters.  You may pay a monthly fee, or an hourly rate.
